With the model code of conduct coming into force ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the state education department has asked the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan regional offices and district education officers not to distribute books to government school students under the SSA for the new academic session.

As the academic session starts on April 1, the students will not get books till the election code of conduct ends on May 16.
SSA officials have not picked the books from the depots following the instructions. The district education office said it had received directions from the principal secretary of school education to stop distributing the books.Schoolteachers are worried that if students do not get books how they are going to teach them.
"If the Election Commission does not allow the distribution of book, students will have to wait for another one-and-a-half month for this. It will hamper their (students) studies badly," a teacher said. Another teacher said they would have to make the students study old books.

Anjali Bhawra, principal secretary of school education, said the education department had already written to the Election Commission of India to allow them to distribute the books during the code of conduct so that students' studies were not affected.
"Last week, we requested the Election Commission to allow the distribution of books. We are waiting for its reply. The day we get permission, we will allow the SSA offices and district education officers to distribute the books of all the classes," she said.
The education department has changed the date of parent-teacher meeting and the school management meeting from March 26 to April 7.
After teachers complained of getting very little time to check papers and declaring result, the department has issued fresh instructions on declaring the results on March 31 instead of on March 26.

Bhawra has issued circular to district education officers to conduct parent-teacher meeting on April 7. Earlier, the department was instructed to declare the results on March 26, exactly a day after the completion of practical examinations of Classes 9-11.
