The municipal corporation (MC) is going to shift its schools as well as the 28 ETT teachers to the education department as the state government has recently directed the civic body to do so. Seven schools are running under the MC.
The civic body has been issued orders by the government, following which the MC has started the process.
Government primary schools at Chet Singh Nagar, Ishar Nagar, Janta Nagar, Laxman Nagar, Basti Jodhewal, Iqbal Ganj and Subhash Nagar are the seven schools being run under the Ludhiana MC.
MC joint commissioner Amarjit Singh Sekhon said, “We have received the orders from the state government to do so. The process has been started and the teachers will be shifted to the education department. With this, the schools will also come under the education department.”
He said that these schools were handed over to the MC around nine years ago. The MC was generally looking after the repair work of the schools.
MC superintendent Nirmal Singh said the department has to shift the teachers and schools within a month.
A teacher, seeking anonymity, said, “The teachers, who were working under zila parishad were shifted to the education department earlier. Now the teachers working under the MC will be shifted to the education department. However, it is a good step but there is a need to upgrade the schools and infrastructure.”
The schools under MC lack playgrounds. Necessary steps should be taken to ensure sports activities in these schools, he added.
It is pertinent to mention here that the MC schools lack in staff, benches and classrooms. Government primary school of Basti Jodhewal is being run on the premises of Subash Nagar school. The school in Janta Nagar is being run in a gurdwara.
