Eight men were on Saturday sentenced to imprisonment for the rest of their lives for killing four people in a clash between Nihang groups at Budha Dal Complex here in September 2007.

The victims were from the family of Balbir Singh, head of the largest Nihang faction after being declared heir of Santa Singh.

Four Nihangs from this faction received 10-year rigorous imprisonment for attempt to murder in the same incident. Balbir Singh’s father, Assa Singh; brothers, Jagdish Singh and Karamjit Singh; and nephew Bhajan Singh, were killed and seven others were injured.

Rival Nihang leader Uday Singh had raided the abode of Balbir Singh to wipe out his family and grab his seat. Public prosecutor DK Jain said Uday Singh had been declared proclaimed offender and imprisonment till death awarded to eight accused, while 15 others had been acquitted. Ravinder Singh, Sukhdev Singh, Kartar Singh, Ranjit Singh, Kulwant Singh, Kikar Singh and Jagsir Singh are the convicts. Accused Surjit Singh and Major Singh died during the four-year trial.

Those imprisoned for attempt to kill three men of Uday Singh’s group are Baldev Singh, Vishawpartap Singh, Dyal Singh, and his son, Laxman Singh, while three more were acquitted. Since the Nihang factions have clashed several times, there was extra security in the court on Saturday when the verdict was delivered.
