Eight of wedding party killed in Chamba mishap

Eight members of a wedding party were killed and 19 others injured on Tuesday when an overloaded pickup van rolled 250 feet down a gorge in the remote Salooni subdivision of Chamba district in Himachal Pradesh.

The accident occurred around 2.30am at Bakura Nullah near Batarwah village on the Lachordi-Talka road, about 55 kilometers from Chamba, when 27 people were on board the private vehicle. Victims Ajay Kumar (18), Dinesh Kumar (27), Vipan Kumar (31) Sishu Pal (18) Sandeep Kumar (16), Kulddep Singh (19), Surjeet (17), and Subhash Kumar (30) are all from nearby villages.

Injured Chaman Lal, Manoj Kumar, Santosh Kumar, Ajay Kumar, Vijay Kumar, Vijay Kumar, Khem Raj, Hakam, Man Singh, Manoj, Ishu Pal, Lekh Raj, Yog Raj, Shubhamw, Rajesh Kumar, Pratap Singh, Yog Raj, Bhotu Ram and Kuldeep Kumar are all in the age group of 17 to 23. “The van was overloaded and the driver lost control of it probably while negotiating a sharp curve,” said Chamba’s additional superintendent of police Kulwant Thakur.

Teams moved from Salooni and Chamba joined the villages in rescue. Rugged terrain, slippery slopes, and darkness hindered the operation. The injured were moved to the regional hospital in Chamba, from where four were referred to Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College (RPGMC), Chamba.

Himachal Pradesh governor Kalyan Singh and chief minister Virbhadra Singh have expressed grief over the accident. “The government will give Rs 10,000 as immediate relief to the nearest relative of every victim, besides Rs 5,000 each to the injured,” said Virbhadra, directing doctors to provide the injured with the best of treatment. The police are on with investigations after registering a case.
