The ‘killer’ celebratory firing in the marriage party here at Patiala’s village claimed the life of an elderly woman on Sunday. The 70-year-old woman was injured with a shot of .12 bore double barrel gun during the firing by a youth.
The deceased was identified as Surjit Kaur, a resident of Kadrabad village, 35 km from here. She was standing in the way of marriage procession at the time of the incident. Accused Arshdeep Singh, resident of the same village as the victim, is on the run.
The police said the accused, who is a relative of the bridegroom, was firing shots in the sky with his gun but a cartridge blocked. When he lowered his gun down to check the problem, it misfired and hit into the thigh of the deceased.
“When the marriage procession was getting ready to move towards the wedding venue, Arshdeep took out his gun for opening fire. The gunshot hit into the leg of the elderly woman, who was there to see the wedding customs of the family,” said sarpanch of the village.
She was rushed to the Rajindra Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries due to the excess loss of blood.
Meeta Ram, son of the deceased, lodged a police complaint against the accused after the incident.
A case has been registered under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 25, 27/54/59 of Arms Act at Sadar Samana police station.
Investigating officer (IO) Narpinder Singh said the investigation was on in the case.
The offficer added that the body had been handed over to the family members of the deceased after the post-mortem examination.
