Punjab Police defeated Northern Railways, 4-2, in the first league match of the 37th Liberals All India Hockey Tournament at Punjab Public School hockey grounds on Wednesday.
Defending champions, Punjab Police, left no chance for the opponents to dominate the match.
The cops got their first breakthrough in the 2nd minute through Avtar Singh who converted a penalty corner.
Satwinder Singh of Punjab Police widened the margin further in the 23rd minute.
The score was 2-0 in the first half. In 39th minute, the cops scored again, taking the score board to 3-0, dashing any hopes of a comeback by the railways men. Ajay Kumar hit the fourth and the last goal for Punjab Police.
Northern Railways scored in the 53rd and 70th minute of the match.
In the second match, Border security Force (BSF) drew 1-1 against West-Central Railways in a well fiercely contested encounter.
Meanwhile, Air Force secured an easy victory over Western Railways, routing the latter by 2-0. Harish Kumar and Harpreet Singh scored in the 50th and the 52nd minutes of the match.
In the last match of the day, runners-up Electrical Mechanical Engineering (EME), Jalandhar, managed to edge out Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), New Delhi, 1-0 in the dying seconds of the game. Gurjinder Singh scored the only goal of the match.
On Thursday, Western Railways, Mumbai, would face Sports Hostel, Lucknow; EME, Jalandhar, would go head-to-head with SRC, Ramgarh; Punjab Police would take on Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL), Patiala, while BSF, Jalandhar, would lock horns with Hawks, Ropar.
