Encroachments in Field Ganj troubles commuters

Despite knowing that encroachments lead to traffic snarls, shopkeepers are using the area to do brisk businesses. Besides, moving carts and parked vehicles on roads are also creating problems for commuters.
According to locals, ambulances get stuck in traffic snarls every day, but no strict action is being taken to remove encroachments which are generally up to 10 feet.
“To ensure smooth flow of traffic, encroachments should be removed as every second is precious for the patient being taken in ambulance to the hospital,” an emergency medical technician said.
“Eateries and garment store owners, who display their items outside their shops, have covered major portion of the road. Besides, several handcarts can be seen on roads. It is total failure of the authorities who rarely come forward to remove these encroachments. Heavy fine should be charged so that nobody could encroach upon the road which leads to two big hospitals of the city,” Sukhjeet Singh, a resident of Field Ganj, said.
During festive season, huge rush is witnessed owing to which trees are being cut to widen these roads. The municipal corporation should take step to remove encroachments,” Singh said.
Rakesh Prashar, councillor, ward number 36, said: “I have written to higher MC officials to remove the encroachments but no action has been taken so far.”
When contacted, MC additional commissioner, Davinder Singh, assured of taking necessary action to remove encroachments.
