The Vigilance Bureau (VB), on Wednesday, nabbed an assistant junior engineer (AJE) of the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) while accepting Rs 40, 000 as bribe for a tubewell power connection.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP) of the bureau, Bathinda range, Sukhdev Singh Chahal, said that AJE Darshan Singh, posted at Bhai Rupa village, was nabbed by the VB team after laying a trap.
Karnail Singh, a resident of Adampura village, under the Phul subdivision, had complained to the VB that the official was demanding a bribe of Rs 40, 000 for the power connection, despite the fact that the connection had been duly sanctioned by the authorities concerned.
He alleged that, he along with his brother Jarnail Singh, had purchased 28 acres of land at Bhai Rupa village in 2005 from Gurdev Singh. As Gurdev Singh had applied for a power connection for the tubewell on the said land, it was decided in the land deal that the power connection would also be in the name of new owners.
"In August 2013, the government sanctioned him the power connection for the tubewell on the land and he deposited Rs 87, 906 for the same. But the connection was not given even after nine months of its sanction. Then I approached the PSPCL for this purpose," he said in his complaint, adding that the said AJE demanded Rs 50, 000 from him and the deal was fixed at Rs 40, 000. On his complaint, the VB laid a trap and caught the official red-handed while accepting the bribe at his office.
