A woman studying engineering in SAS Nagar and belonging to Haruwal village in Batala's Dera Baba Nanak police jurisdiction of Gurdaspur district was allegedly kidnapped, confined and raped repeatedly by a young trader known to her.

She had come to her village during vacations and, on March 10, was outside her house around 7.30pm when three young men drove in, forced her into their car, and took her to Hoshiarpur, where Jaspreet Singh, a trader from the nearby village of Sadanwali, allegedly raped her repeatedly over four days.

On Friday evening, she escaped back to her house and then her family approached the police. After her medical examination, the Dera Baba Nanak police registered a case under Sections 376 (punishment for rape), 363 (punishment for kidnapping), 366 (kidnapping woman to compel her for marriage), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation), and 120-B (punishment for criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against three men.

Main accused Jaspreet Singh and his alleged accomplices in the crime, Vicky of Hoshiarpur village and an unidentified youth, are on the run. A manhunt for them is on.
