Prisoner Gurjinder Singh, who had escaped while being brought back from a court in Nawanshahr, was not killed in a accident the next day, contrary to what the Faridkot police had reported earlier.
On May 27, the police had announced Gurjinder Singh, fugitive from the Faridkot modern jail, killed in a car accident near Ambala town of neighbouring Haryana while on the run. The Ambala police had relayed a message here that the driver of Gurjinder's getaway car was injured.
What happened was that Gurjinder was referred from an Ambala hospital to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh, from where he slipped out again.
The police had also issued suspension order to the three men who had escorted the prisoner to the Nawanshahr court. The prisoner was in jail over violation of the Arms Act.
"When a police team went to Ambala, it found that Gurjinder Singh was alive, though injured, and now he had escaped from the PGI," superintendent of police (detective) Dilbagh Singh Pannu told the media here on Friday. "We have confirmed that he is still alive and on the run."
