In a daring incident, two miscreants, who had assaulted an assistant sub inspector (ASI) a few days ago, attacked a police team again while they tried to stop them during a naka in Batala near Chowdharywal village on Monday night.
Though a heavy police force, including DSP Kirpal Singh, was present on the spot and tried to chase the miscreants, they fled from the spot under the cover of darkness.
Giving information, the DSP said after getting a tip-off that the accused, who had assaulted ASI Balwinder Kumar a fortnight ago, were seen moving around Chowdharywal village under Ranger Nangal police station, subsequently he, along with a police team laid a naka outside the village. During checking, they tried to stop two youths, who were on a motorcycle, one of the accused attacked constable Gurdev Singh with a dagger.
Though the police team challenged the accused, the accused managed to flee from the spot after damaging their official vehicle.
Talking to HT, Batala SSP Daljinder Singh said the miscreants were believed to be from the same gang, who had assaulted the ASI at New Dharampura Colony a few days ago, while he was coming back from duty. The miscreants also fled away with his service pistol and some cartridges.
“Subsequently after the incident, we had sounded a red alert in the entire area and police teams were dispatched for the immediate arrest of all the accused involved in this incident,” he added.
It is pertinent to mention here that the incident once again exposed the laxity of the Batala police, which even after having specific tip-off about the accused not only failed to arrest them, but also became the victim of their murderous attack as the constable Gurdev Singh, who tried to stop them had a narrow escape, while they damaged the police vehicle in the presence of the DSP.
