In the family business of politics in Haryana, all members are partners.

Dushyant Chautala, 26, the fourth-generation politician from the Devi Lal clan, is contesting from Hisar for the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), and is being helped by his younger brother Digvijay and mother Nayana Singh. Together they hold about 40 public meetings a day.

Social media is coming in handy, too, but personal contact is their main way. “We are banking on the young generation to help us bring in a political change. Though our team is limitedly active on Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp, I believe in establishing personal contact to garner more support,” said Dushyant, an alumnus of Lawrence School, Sanawar (HP), and graduate in business administration from California State University, US.

Two main faces of the INLD, Dushyant’s grandfather and former chief minister Om Prakash Chautala and father Ajay Chautala, are undergoing a jail term in New Delhi over a scam in teachers’ recruitment, the family is getting firm support from the Badal family of Punjab.

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president and Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal had accompanied Dushyant in Hisar at his nomination-filing.

The SAD is a partner of the BJP, which is in opposition to the INLD. But family ties come first.

“Chautalas are our extended family and I reaffirm my full support to Dushyant,” Sukhbir had told reporters here last week.

Likewise, family members of other politicians are actively participating in campaigning. In Hisar, Bishnoi’s son Bhavya Bishnoi is seen at important political functions, including filing of nomination of his father and public meetings in the town. The HJC chief ’s wife Renuka, who is the MLA from Adampur assembly segment, is also involved.

Similarly, Aam Aadmi Party candidate Yudhbir Singh Khayalia’s advocate son Sanjeet Singh is helping his father.

Congress candidate Sampat Singh and BJP’s Rao Inderjit Singh from Gurgaon are regular on Facebook, for which they are taking help of the families. Rao Inderjit Singh’s daughter Bharti Rao is often seen with him at important campaigns and rallies. Congress candidate from Kurukshetra, Naveen Jindal, is assisted by his mother Savitri, wife Shallu and elder brothers Prithvi Raj and Ratan.
