Soon after the UT education department decided to challenge St Kabir’s Public School, Sector 26, Chandigarh’s minority status, the assistant estate officer confirmed that the estate office received another list of private local schools to conduct fair inspection in the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) enrolment issue.
Sources said that a show-cause notice would be issued to 54 schools out of a total of 81 private schools in the coming week.
UT estate office had already issued show cause notices to 27 other schools that had not filled the requisite number of EWS seats under the administration’s land allotment scheme.
Some of which include; Strawberry Field School, Sector 26; Shishu Niketan Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 22; DAV Public School Sector 8 and Bal Niketan Model School, Sector 37.
Assistant estate office- cum-sub divisional magistrate (central) Prince Dhawan said, “I have received a compiled list of private schools from the education department and will take necessary steps and action. Will ensure no school feels it is being treated in a biased manner in this regard.”
Some schools continue to claim they didn’t find EWS children at the time of admission, while some said they aren’t bound to admit children from the EWS category as they didn’t get land on concessional rates.
Meanwhile, education secretary Sarvjit Singh said, “The issued is being dealt with as strictly as possible. The administration’s council has already sent its representation to the National Minority Commission so schools who are claiming minority status to simply escape EWS admissions; don’t get away easily, unless these are in reality, minority schools.”
