It seems that Gurjeet Singh Kohli ,younger son of former Shiromani Akali Dal minister Surjit Singh Kohli, has postponed the idea of joining the Bharatiya Janata Party as the formal joining function scheduled to be held in Patiala on Thursday has been cancelled at the eleventh hour.
The reluctance of Kohli to join the national party in Patiala where his father and elder brother former mayor Ajitpal Singh Kohli, SAD loyalists, hold good rapport among SAD supporters, has reportedly made the BJP cancel the function.
If political experts are to believed, Kohli's joining may also dent his father domination in the Patiala constituency during the Lok Sabha elections.
As per earlier plans, BJP's state president Kamal Sharma was expected to attend the function which was specially planned for Kohli's joining.
Kohli, a businessman, has good relations with the BJP and reportedly enjoys close proximity with several BJP national level leaders in New Delhi.
One of the senior leaders of BJP said following the willingness of Kohli, BJP's national unit had approached Punjab BJP president, instructing him to make arrangements for his joining in Patiala.
"The function has been cancelled following Kohli's dilemma and reluctance over joining the party in Patiala. The programme may now be rescheduled and will be changed , possibly at Chandigarh in the near future", the leader said.
Patiala district president of the BJP Anil Bajaj confirmed about the development.
"I have been informed by state president Kamal Sharma about the development and following his instructions we had started making arrangements for formal joining of Kohli on Thursday. But the programme has been cancelled for some reasons better known to senior leaders", he said.
However, he refused to comment over the reasons. "We started making arrangements and then cancelled the programme only on high command's direction", he added.
When contacted, Gurjeet Singh Kohli said he is presently in New Delhi to attend an auto expo.
"Though I belongs to a staunch Akali family but people will come to know whenever I will join the BJP", he said giving a boost to the speculations regarding his joining.
"I have very close friends in the BJP and enjoy good rapport with leaders associated with the BJP at the national level", he added.
BJP's state president Kamal Sharma could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
