Hundreds of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) workers blocked the Jakhal-Sunam road in Lehragaga on Tuesday to protest the alleged murder of former sarpanch of Alisher village, Harmesh Chand Mesi, 53, who, they alleged, was killed in a ‘fake road accident’ by the men associated with the Congress from Alisher on Sunday.
According to information, Harmesh Chand was hit by a car when he was travelling on his scooter around 1 pm on Sunday. However, the Akali workers alleged that he was murdered by some Congress-‘backed’ men of his village. The body of the former sarpanch has not been cremated so far and is lying in the mortuary of the Moonak civil hospital.
“Initially, the police termed it a simple road accident, but when we provided the CCTV footage of the accident, then the police booked four people, who had a clash with Harmesh Chand in the past. But, the police have not arrested any of them; so, we demand justice for the deceased, who was a former sarpanch and a senior SAD leader,” Jathedar Rampal Singh Bheniwal told the HT.
Meanwhile, the police have booked Sukha Singh, Kaka Singh, Pawan Kumar and Krishan Kumar under Section 302 (murder) at the Lehra police station. Sukha Singh and Kaka Singh (both brothers) have been arrested and the rest are absconding.
The Akalis did not lift he blockade of the road, till superintendent of police (SP-H) Harinder Singh told that two accused have been arrested and remaining will also be nabbed soon. The protesters also demanded the suspension of the deputy superintendent of police (DSP), Moonak, and station house officer (SHO), Lehra, for failing to take propper action.
“The DSP of Moonak and SHO of Lehra were protecting the accused and did not act against them. We demand their suspension,” said jathedar Rampal Singh.
Moonak DSP Ajaypal Singh said that some SAD leaders are giving the accident a ‘political colour’. “As per initial information, it was found a road accident, but after watching the CCTV footage, we booked four people for murder. The other two will be arrested after investigation,” said Ajaypal.
