An ex-serviceman, Barinder Singh's (70), body was found lying in the courtyard of his house in Janauri village, 25 km from here, on Tuesday morning.

He had reportedly committed suicide by shooting himself with a .12 bore double barrel gun, found lying beside the body. A suicide note recovered from the spot stated that he was ending his life, due to harassment by his daughter-in-law, Sharda, and her other relatives.

Sharda had got registered a dowry case against her husband Anchal Singh, who works in Delhi and his close kin in Gagret (HP), on May 5, which had upset Barinder, a villager added.

A case under Section 306 ( abetting suicide) has been registered against six people, including the daughter-in-law, parents, two sisters and two others at the Hariana police station.

Hariana SHO Bikramjit Singh reached the spot and took the body in custody.

The SHO added that in the intervening night of May 2 and 3, the police had received a call from Sharda, who complained that she was beaten up and locked up in a room by her in-laws.

"A police team visited the Janauri village and a case under Section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code was registered on her complaint. However, the next day Sharda and her father gave us in writing that they wanted to pursue the case at their native place in Himachal Pradesh," he said

Villagers said that on May 4, panchayats from both the sides had tried to settle the dispute but failed.
