A 67-year-old ex-serviceman was allegedly shot dead by his nephew due to a land dispute near the Kacha Doshanj road here on Wednesday evening.

Police officials said that the deceased has been identified as Baldev Singh of Doshanj village in the district. The attackers also snatched the licensed revolver of the ex-army man.

The deceased's son Jaswinder Singh, who has been working in the Punjab Home Guards said, "My father and my uncle Santhok Singh had gone to Moga on Wednesday morning for appearing in a local court in a land dispute. While both were returning to the village, our opponent in the case Avtar Singh came on a motorcycle with some others people and opened fire at my father and uncle. Unfortunately, my father died on the spot while my uncle Santhok Singh had a narrow escape." Paramjit Singh, station house officer of Mehan police station, said that the body of the deceased was taken to Dr Mathura Dass Pahwa civil hospital here for autopsy. "We are investigating the entire matter. However, a case has been registered in this regard on the statement of Jaswinder Singh," said the SHO.
