Ex-servicemen in the state have hailed the announcement of union finance minister P Chidambaram to grant them 'one rank, one pension'.
Welcoming the announcement, Congress ex-servicemen department chairman Col BC Lagwal (retd) said the government had “taken the right decision”, which would help the ex-servicemen community “a lot”.
“The Congress has already done a lot for the welfare of the serving soldiers and ex-servicemen and their families, and the latest announcement will help them progress in every sphere of life,” he added.
District president of the Congress ex-servicemen department former Havaldar Chetan Lakhanpal credited the Congress for the “ex-servicemen's victory” in the “long battle” over the policy.
Havaldar Ramesh Chand of Jahoo said the announcement was “a welcome step” and would boost the image of the Congress in the next elections.
However, Bharatiya Janata Party ex-servicemen cell's state convenor Chet Ram Chauhan termed the announcement a “political stunt”, alleging that there were anomalies in the salaries of servicemen, as compared to that of their civilian counterparts. “Whenever elections approach, the Congress comes up with such gimmicks. We will be convinced that something concrete has been done only when the scheme is implemented,” he alleged.
