Local councillor Vijay Kumar Thappar, who was elected on a BJP ticket, was inducted into the Shiromani Akali Dal on Saturday in the presence of SAD leader and Batala halqa incharge Lakhbir Singh Lodhinangal.
As many as 50 families owing alliance to the BJP also joined the SAD along with Thappar, who was elected from ward number 33.
He was expelled from the BJP by state unit president Kamal Sharma on April 26 for six years for extending support to Jatinder Kalyan for municipal council presidentship in April even though the latter was boycotted by the BJP.
Welcoming Thappar into the SAD fold, Lodhinangal said that he and his supporters would be given due respect in the ruling party. He further said that the way many people had joined the SAD in the last few months showed that the people of Punjab were happy with the developmental policies of the Badal government.
MC president and expelled BJP councillor Jatinder Kalyan was also present on this occasion.
Interestingly, a few months back, Lodhinangal had inducted more than 20 BJP families from ward number 20 into the SAD fold, after which the then local BJP president Ashok Modgill held a press conference and blamed Lodhinangal for eroding the BJP base in the constituency.
When contacted, district BJP president Suresh Bhatia claimed that by inducting an expelled BJP leader into the SAD, Lodhinagal was "betraying" the relations between two alliance partners.
Condemning "cheap politics" played out in the matter, he said that he would lodge a complaint against Lodhinangal with the SAD leadership and also bring the matter to the notice of BJP high command.
