Concerned with the increase in robbery and theft cases in Phagwara city, a small troop from Indian Reserve Batalion (IRB) has been called up to assist local cops.

The local police is facing a severe shortage of staff in all departments due to which it has failed to control crimes in town.

According to the information, 76 IRB jawans have been deputed in Phagwara who will conduct special police checking at vulnerable spots of the city.

Sources said that only 50% staff of total sanctioned strength is working in the city.

"With the limited staff, PCR also has to provide the escort service to VIP vehicles," the source added.

Moreover, cops are forced to use their own vehicles for patrolling the city as only two out of the ten patrolling bikes at the Phagwara police station are working.

A police official on conditions of anonymity added that the government does not even provide funds for fuel.

As per the information, due to staff shortage PCR is working on six beats in one shift, while minimum eleven beats are required to efficiently patrol the whole city.

Gursevak Singh Brar, superintendent of police (SP) Phagwara said that special police checks and are being conducted in the city by the police officials and IRB.

"We have also deputed special force permanently in the city for the security," he said.
