Enthused with the party’s remarkable feat of winning four Lok Sabha seats in Punjab, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has decided to strengthen its organisational set-up in the state at the earliest with an eye on the 2017 assembly elections.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the party’s senior leadership in Delhi on Monday. The meeting was attended by AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal, senior party leaders Prashant Bhushan and Sanjay Singh, party’s newly-elected MPs Bhagwant Mann (Sangrur), Prof Sadhu Singh (Faridkot), Harinder Singh Khalsa (Fatehgarh Sahib) and Dr Dharamvira Gandhi (Patiala), and AAP candidates HS Phoolka (Ludhiana) and Gul Panag (Chandigarh).

An AAP leader said on the condition of anonymity that during the meeting, Kejriwal expressed happiness with the party’s performance in Punjab and stressed upon strengthening its organisational set-up in the state.

“People from Punjab played a vital role in the freedom movement. Now, the second revolution for ‘puran swaraj’ (total self-governance) has also begun from the border state with the victory of AAP candidates,” he added.

He added that during the meeting, the AAP leadership had decided to strengthen its party’s cadre in all assembly segments in Punjab before the assembly elections, due in 2017.

“The AAP leadership has decided to thank all its workers and conveners who worked hard for the victory in Punjab.

The party has also decided to look into the reasons why it could not do well in the other nine Lok Sabha constituencies,” he added.

When contacted, Sangrur MP Bhagwant Mann said, “During the meeting, all senior party leaders were excited with the performance in Punjab and thanked Punjabis, especially NRIs, for their support.”
