Facing acute financial problems, the Institute of Integrated Himalayan Studies of the Himachal Pradesh University is waiting for the release of a `7crore grant by the University Grants Commission. A UGC team had visited the IIHS on October 23 last year.

Saying that the UGC was to release the money in two installments, an HPU official added that the university education regulatory body had granted extension of affiliation to the IIHS till 2017, and several new courses, including MPhil and PhD degrees, were announced which could be started only when the money was released.

The IIHS also had to start some other research work, including studies on culture, environment and rural development. “All research will be started only after the grant comes. We have been waiting for it for two months, and can start the work in time if it is not delayed further,” the official added.

The IIHS, which was established in 2002, was declared a “centre of excellence institute” by the UGC. However, the institute has been facing a financial crunch for the last six months. The HPU itself is in the same position, as the state government has approved a budget lower than the expectations and demand of the university authorities.
