According to data placed by minister of state for agriculture Parshottam Rupala in the Rajya Sabha, 56 farm suicides have taken place in Punjab in the first seven months of this year. For the entire last year, the figure was 46 suicides. The sharp rise in the figure is due to failure of cotton crop on account of whitefly attack and less rainfall.

In 2016, 363 farm suicides have taken place across the nation, most of them in Karnataka-241.
