A 30-year-old farm labourer from Ralla village in this district, committed suicide in Mansa, on Monday.

The police said Birbal Singh was under financial stress as he also had to look after family of his brother, who had died some time ago. On Monday, Birbal hanged himself in his house. A first information report under Section 174 (inquest proceedings) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) was lodged at Joga police station. He was cremated on Tuesday morning in his village.

According to data placed by minister of state for agriculture Parshottam Rupala in the Rajya Sabha, 56 farm suicides have taken place in Punjab in the first seven months of this year. For the entire last year, the figure was 46 suicides. The sharp rise in the figure is due to failure of cotton crop on account of whitefly attack and less rainfall.

In 2016, 363 farm suicides have taken place across the nation, most of them in Karnataka-241.
