A major fire broke out at a refrigerator manufacturing unit in IMT Manesar Sector 3 on Sunday afternoon.
While two firefighters were injured trying to douse the flames, it took the fire tenders more than 100 refilling trips and five hours to bring the raging fire under control. The cloud of smoke emanating out of the site was seen even from Gurgaon, about 18 km away. The reason for the fire is still to be ascertained.
According to fire department officials, the blaze at Frigoglass Pvt Ltd at Sector 3 in IMT Manesar began at 12.30pm and spread rapidly due to the presence of inflammable material and a large number of refrigerator cylinders in the factory. However, Sunday being a holiday, none was injured. “Our team reached the spot within 15 minutes of the fire being reported. Apart from fire tenders from all our stations, we also had the help from firefighters from nearby factories,” said fire officer Mahendra Singh Bharadwaj.
Apart from fire tenders from four stations in Gurgaon, tenders were also called from Sohna, Rewari, as well as from private players, DLF, Hero Moto Corp and IMT Manesar. According to officials, the fire was completely under control by 5pm. They said the fire tenders would remain at the site overnight due to the inflammable nature of the materials present. “Due to the close proximity of the burnt unit with other companies/factories and high concentration of flammable materials, the fire tenders will remain stationed at the spot,” Bharadwaj added.
Apart from major damage to the equipment, officials suspected major losses to the company. The company officials could not be contacted for comments.
