Factory worker Raj Kumar Tinku, 36, was murdered while two others were injured after six men — purportedly belonging to a group of drug peddlers — attacked them with swords during a pre-wedding function of a friend in Labour Colony in Jalandhar late Sunday night. Two of the accused — Ravi Kumar and his brother Rakesh Kumar — were arrested in the city on Monday, while four others were on the run.
The victim’s family members alleged that the attackers had been angered after the victims had asked them not to sell illicit drugs in the locality. All three victims, Tinku, Kailash Sharma and his brother Raj Kumar, were taken to the local civil hospital where Tinku succumbed. Additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP) Ravinder Pal Singh Sandhu and other officials rushed to the spot. Besides the two men arrested, the FIR lists the accused as Maninder, Deep Sandhu, Ajay Pal and one unidentified man, under section 302 (murder) and others of the Indian Penal Code.
BJP leader named by kin
The victim’s family alleged that a BJP leader, Robin Sampla, aide of Union minister state BJP chief Vijay Sampla, supports the accused. Refuting the allegations, Robin said, “I am a political leader and my image is being maligned by political opponents. I do not know the accused or the victims.”
Police commissioner PK Sinha said teams are conducting raids for the accused. He acknowledged that the family had named Robin and thus a “detailed probe” is on.
