A student of Rayat and Bahra College, SAS Nagar, committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan in his hostel room on Monday.

The deceased has been identified as Athinder Pal Singh, 21, a resident of Bathinda. He was staying at the hostel for the past four years. No suicide note has been recovered from his room.

Police sources said Athinder was in fourth year of his law degree and was to appear for his exam on Tuesday, but he had not got his roll number due to non-payment of fee.

According to sources, he had called his mother in the afternoon regarding the fee payment, but his mother had scolded him and expressed inability to pay the fee on such a short notice. Feeling depressed that he would not be able to appear for exams, he went to his hostel room and took this extreme step, the sources added.

“I am shocked at the incident and have sought complete details,” said chancellor of Rayat and Bhara University GS Bahra.

Parents of the deceased have been informed about the incident.
