The family of a married woman got her freed from the "illegal confinement" of her in-laws at Dhariwal Sohian village with police help on Monday. Her husband Manjit Singh is said to owe allegiance to the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal and has been elected sarpanch in the recent panchayat elections.

Pawandeep Kaur has since been admitted in the Batala civil hospital. Her brother Yadwinder Singh of Chourha Madhra village under Sri Hargobindpur police station said that Pawandeep was married to Manjit Singh in 2006.

He claimed that the family have handsome dowry to her sister, including 350 gram gold ornaments and a Maruti car. The woman's brother further alleged that Pawandeep's in-laws were tormenting her since marriage for more dowry and beat her up frequently. Yadwinder claimed that her in-laws sold off most dowry items and were now demanding a bigger car.

He said that when his family refused to meet the demand, Pawandeep's in-laws allegedly confined her in a room of their house for the last three days.

Meanwhile, Sri Hargobindpur SHO Kamalbir Singh said that he would initiate legal action on the basis of the woman statement and after receiving her medical report.
