High drama was witnessed at a private hospital here on Saturday morning when relatives of a patient created ruckus following her death, alleging negligence on part of the hospital management.

Manjeet Kaur (40), the victim, was admitted to the Chhabra Neuro Care and Trauma Centre on Thursday after she was diagnosed of brain tumor. The doctors said surgery was required for removing the tumor.

The patient breathed her last on Saturday morning to the shock of her family members. According to the deceased’s relatives she died during the course of operation and the doctors informed that she was under observation after the surgery and did not let anyone meet her. They were later informed about her death.

They claimed that the hospital staff charged Rs 2 lakh for the surgery and around Rs 1.25 lakh were spent on medicines. The hospital management demanded more money from them, they said.

Refuting their claims, Dr RPS Chhabra, a senior doctor at the hospital, said, “The operation was done in a proper manner and the patient was showing signs of recovery. But during observation, her condition suddenly deteriorated. The hospital charged only Rs 40,000 from them and they still owe around Rs 12,000 as medical bills.”

Earlier, the district consumer redressal forum had fined Dr RPS Chhabra for medical negligence.
