Mandeep Kaur, a resident of Surghuri village of Jaitu subdivision, tried to commit suicide inside the police station at Jaitu, after she was allegedly insulted by the police over a dispute in the village.

The police had called Mandeep Kaur to the police station with some others over a dispute over a 'nalli' (drain) in a street in her locality. Mandeep has allegedly charged the police with forcing her to strike a compromise with the opposite party and alleged that the police used insulting language against here and also slapped her.

The woman tried to commit suicide by consuming some poisonous substance which she had already brought with her. She was immediately rushed to the local civil hospital where she is under treatment.

"The police were not acting fairly and intimidating our family in an old case registered on the complaint of his wife in September 2013," alleged Jagtar Singh, her husband.

"The matter would be investigated and the action would be taken against anyone found guilty," said Gurjeet Singh Romana, deputy superintendent of police, Jaitu.
