There is a shortage of teachers at government school at Hari Naon village in this district, affecting the studies of hundreds of students.

Around 600 students are on the rolls of Government Senior Secondary School, from classes 6 to 12, but their studies is being affected as six posts of teacher have been lying vacant.

The posts of the lecturer in physics and in Punjabi are lying vacant after the teachers concerned reportedly went abroad. The physical education lecturer is on deputation at the district headquarters. The post of chemistry lecturer is also lying vacant. The English teacher has not joined work and the science mistress has proceeded on maternity leave.

"Six posts of teacher are lying vacant and students are suffering. We find it very difficult to teach the students as the shortage of teachers is affecting students," said a teacher.

"Certain subjects require experts, but a few teachers are being given the additional duty of teaching these subjects, which they cannot," said another teacher.

The school that was upgraded from high to secondary years ago offers science stream. But the required strength of teachers is seldom complete. There is reportedly a biology teacher while the posts of physics and chemistry teachers are lying vacant. Students have been discouraged and are left with no other option but to seek admission in private schools.

"After the rationalisation, we lost five posts of teacher and are finding it tough to cover the syllabus. We want the posts to be filled soon so that the studies does not suffer," said principal Neena Kaura.

District education officer (secondary) Amarjeet Singh Khokhar said he would look into the matter.
