A girl (17) from Rameana in Jaitu sub-division of this district hanged herself to death on Saturday morning at her house after her photograph with a boy from her village and school was uploaded on instant messaging platform WhatsApp.
The victim was in Class 10 at Rameana’s government senior secondary school, where the accused is in Class 11. Both are from Dalit families. Based on the statement of the girl’s father, Kulwinder Singh, police have registered a case against the boy. The victim was eldest of four sisters.
About 7am, her father had left for his shop at the village bus stand and her mother taken the other children to school. The girl was home alone. “When my wife got back around 9am, she found about the suicide and called me up. The body of my daughter hung from an iron girder supporting the roof. We lowered it in the presence of some villagers, by cutting the cloth tied around the girl’s neck,” Kulwinder Singh has recorded in his police statement. “A boy from the village had forced her to get into the picture, and then posted it on WhatsApp. She shared with us that she feared humiliation at the school,” the complainant alleged.
Police reached the school for investigation. “We have forbidden our students from carrying mobile phones to school but searching the girls is difficult for us,” said principal Rakesh Kumar Goyal.
Jaitu station house officer (SHO) Jasbir Singh Pannu and deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Kuldeep Bishnoi had their official mobile phones switched off. It was Faridkot senior superintendent of police Sukhminder Singh Mann who confirmed the registration of a case under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The victim’s body was sent to Faridkot’s GGS Medical College for autopsy.
The photograph posted on Whatsapp seems to have been taken by a third party.
