Around 40 farm labourers and Sikh protesters were on Monday detained at various places in the district. They were later released in the evening.

Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) leaders, including Sukhpal Singh Alisher, Mahinder Singh and Nirmal Singh, were taken into preventive custody at Bhikhi while they were marching towards the residence of Budhlada SAD MLA Chatan Singh Samao.

“We detained 25 protesters and later released them in the evening,” said Jasveer Singh, station house officer of Bhikhi police station.

Farm labourers were detained when they came out to protest against SAD Rajya Sabha MP Balwinder Singh Bhundar, who was scheduled to distribute compensation cheques among farmers in Nandgarh village. “The MP was scheduled to visit some villages in his constituency to distribute cheques to distressed cotton farmers. We detained some farm labourers before they could disrupt Bhundar’s visit and later released them in the evening,” said Jaskaran Singh Brar, station house officer of Jhunir police station.
