Farmer commits suicide in Sangrur

A farmer Manjit Singh, 23, of Sheron village, committed suicide here on Sunday by consuming poison at his residence, claimed Joginder Singh, a leader of the Bhartiy Kisan Union (Ugraha).

Joginder said Manjit was not married and was under debt of `3 lakh. His father Atma Singh died a few years ago and his mother became mentally unstable after his death.

Manjit Singh's elder brother is married and both used to farming jointly on three acres of land. The debt was also shared fifty-fifty by both the brothers.

Station house officer inspector Baljinder Singh said, "No one has approached the police regarding the suicide by the young farmer." Even deputy superintendent of police Sunam Jagatpreet Singh said, "I'm not aware of any suicide by farmer as we have not registered any case under 174 of CrPc."

When contacted, state president of the union Joginder Singh Ugraha said he was not aware of any suicide taking place.
