As the state government intends to conduct another survey to take note of farmer suicide cases in Punjab, another farmer suicide has been reported from Kohrian village in this district.
The police said that according to the family, Bhura Singh, 55, went to his fields around 4am on Monday and consumed a poisonous substance.
The body was spotted later when his son took tea for him.
SHO Subegh Singh said the family stated that Singh was in depression for the past many months because of the "inadequate" agricultural land and the mounting loan.
He is survived by wife, a son and two daughters.
The police said the farmer had around three acres of land of which he had sold an acre and a half for the marriage of his daughters, and with the remaining land, it had become difficult to make ends meet.
The body was handed over to the family after the post-mortem.
