A farmer jumped into the Sirhind canal along with his five-year-old son near Katana Sahib, 23 km from Ludhiana. The body of the farmer was fished out, but a search was on for his son.

The deceased was identified as Jaswant Singh, 38, of Sahabana village. He and his son Jaskaran Singh were missing since Friday.

Passersby saw Jaswant’s body floating on the canal near Neelon bridge on Monday and informed police.

Jaswant’s friend Gupreet Singh said he was under a debt of Rs 10 lakh. He said people saw Jaswant and Jaskaran at Katana Sahib gurdwars on Friday. They left after paying obeisance, he added.

Jaswant Singh is survived by his wife, father, mother and a 16-year-old daughter.

Police have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure and efforts were on to trace Jaskaran.
