Hundreds of farmers blocked SH12 on the Sirhind-Khamanon road near Talia village on Saturday protesting the non-supply of power to their tube wells for irrigation, leaving many commuters inconvenienced.

The farmers were from Talania, Ferozepur, Bahadargarh, Baghsikandar, Jadkhela Khedi and Dera Meermeera villages and raised slogans against the state government for not providing sufficient power to plant paddy saplings.

The dharna was suspended after the SDM Bassi Pathana, who was passing through the area, directed the executive engineer of the electricity department to solve the problems of the farmers within two days.

Former councilor of Talania Major Singh said the delay in monsoon further aggravated the problems of the farmers were already facing financial crises. Saying that the government had promised 8 hours of uninterrupted power supply to the farmers while providing just two to three hours a day, he pointed that the shortage was likely to damage their crops.

He said that the power department had not given a fixed time for the supply and alleged that the electricity board had not done anything about it in spite of complaining many times.

He also warned that protests would intensify if their issues were not resolved. Farmers block road in protest against non-supply of power.
