More than 500 farmers, members of Bhartiya Kissan Union (BKU), held a protest march in Fatehgarh Sahib demanding the efficient implementation of land reforms and opposing the land acquisition bill proposed by the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government.
The farmers also blocked the State Highway 12 (SH-12) - the Sirhind-Chandigarh road.
BKU state president Peshora Singh said, "The land acquisition bill is against the basic rights of farmers. Our struggle against the bill will continue till the bill is withdrawn. Farmers are already battling several problems like urea shortage."
Peshora and his delegation also handed over a demand memorandum to Fatehgarh Sahib district magistrate KS Sangha. "Farmers continue to be neglected. The government is bound to compensate the farmers for his loss and land.
For this year's untimely rains, the government should give a compensation of more than Rs 10,000 per acre as compensation."
