Unexpected overnight rainfall coupled with slow lifting of wheat have left farmers' fraternity worried. Even though, the procurement season is running into its 13th day, the government purchase of wheat yield is yet to take off at almost all the grain markets. The district authorities have stipulated 105 purchasing centres across the district.

Overnight spell of heavy rain and strong winds on Saturday night not only posed a serious threat to the standing crop but also to already harvested crop lying unattended due to the negligent attitude of the procurement authorities.

Seeing no hope of the start of purchase, farmers along with commission agents blocked the Patiala-Sanaur road for more than one hour on Sunday.

The agitators alleged that the authorities have not made adequate arrangements for protecting their yield from rain, while adequate gunny bags are yet to reach the grain market.

District controller of food and civil supplies (DCFCS) Ajayveer Sarao said the purchase had already started.

"At some places, we have been facing problems of labour rates, while we have initiated purchase at centres where farmers have started bringing their yield. The issue pertaining to labour rates will be solved by Monday afternoon," he said.
