Monday was day of traffic blocks and dharnas by farmers, commission agents and mandi labourers to protest the poor sale of paddy.
More than 300 farmers under the banner of Jamhoori Kisan Sabha blocked traffic on the national highway no 71 at Partapura village.
Farmers, commission agents and labourer blocked traffic on Nakodar Kapurthala road at Malian Kalan village and farmers and activists of Bharat Naujawan Sabha blocked traffic on Mahatpur-Parjian road.
Addressing farmers at Partapura village kisan sabha's general secretary Manohar Singh Gill alleged that farmers were being fleeced in mandis as their paddy was being procured at least Rs 300-400 less per quintal than the minimum support price (MSP).
CPM (Pasla) leader Gurnam Singh Sanghera said some top ruling leaders have joined hands with the commission agents and rice millers.
“Together they are fleecing the farmers who are being forced to sell crops at `800 to `1100 per quintal against the MSP of `1345 per quintal,” he said.
Addressing protesting farmers Congress leaders Amrajit Singh Samra and Jagbir Singh Brar accused the SAD-BJP government of being anti-farmers and anti- labourers.
Jalandhar -1 SDM Iqbal Singh Sandhu reached the spot and received a memorandum from the agitating farmers.
