Raising their voice against land acquisition for Sangrur bypass for the widening of Patiala-Bathinda road, around 50 affected farmers staged a protest in front of the deputy commissioner's office here on Monday.
The farmers had come to the sub divisional magistrate's office for hearing on their objections regarding land acquisition. Darshan Singh from Uppli village said the process of hearing of objection was a mere formality, as the government had already allotted tenders for the construction to some private company.
Another farmer, Amar Singh said the state government published land acquisition notice and sought objections in this regard on June 18, 2012, whereas the tenders were published in February and the work was allotted in March. Besides, the route for the bypass was changed to benefit some politicians, he alleged.
The farmers demanded that the government first notify the rates for land acquisition, receive and consider the objections, finalise the route and then publish the tenders for the work. The farmers also threatened to launch a massive protest and gave a call for self-immolation if the government failed to meet their demands.
"The matter is directly linked to our livelihood and we will not let the authorities to play with our lives," said another farmer.
