Agitated over the delay in wheat purchase in the grain markets of the district, a large number of farmers staged a protest and blocked the Chandigarh-Bathinda NH-64 for five hours here on Friday.
Led by Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta), a big group of farmers sat on a dharna on the Railway chowk and blocked the road causing inconvenience to the people.
Talking to Hindustan Times, the deputy commissioner said, "As the wheat is wet, farmers should show patience. Blocking of roads is also not the solution of the problem, they should approach us if they are facing any problem."
Hakam Singh, a farmer, said, "We have worked day and night, now they have rejected our crop without any reason, how we can tolerate this injustice?"
Another farmer Labh Singh said, "The government has forced us to take to protest. Why don't you ask them (officers) to listen to our grievances."
