Farmers take out protest march in Sangrur

Members of different farmers’ unions, protesting here in support of the agitation by farmers in Bathinda, took out a protest march in the city on Thursday as the indefinite dharna in front of the deputy commissioner’s office entered its fourth day.

Speaking at the dhrana site, leaders demanded that the compensation for cotton farmers should be raised from Rs 600 crore to Rs 3,800 crore. They demanded Rs 40,000 per acre as compensation to the farmers whose cotton crop has been destroyed due to whitefly attack and Rs 20,000 per family of those who worked in cotton fields as labour.

The leaders also demanded the minimum support price of paddy to be fixed at Rs 5,000 per quintal. They also demanded Rs 4,500 per quintal for 1509 paddy variety.

They accused the Modi government of favouring business houses and ignoring the farmers of the country.
