After a little silence, farmers will gherao the residences of MLAs and MPs on Friday. On the one side, Sikh activists are protesting against the desecration of Guru Granth Sahib and killing of Sikh agitators since October 12 and on the other side, the gherao call of eight farmers’ organisations may increase the worries of the Punjab government.

The Kisan unions declared a gherao call of MLAs and MPs on October 23 after the talk failed with chief minister Parkash Singh Badal on October 12.

BKU (Ughara) general secretary Sukhdev Singh Kokri Kalan said, “We will gherao the residences of chief minister Parkash Singh at Badal village; Tota Singh, agriculture minister, at Moga district; Sikander Singh Maluka, rural development and panchayats minister, at Maluka village; Balwinder Singh Bhunder, SAD MP, at Bhunder village; Janmeja Singh Sekhon, PWD minister, at Ferozepur; Adesh Partap Singh Kairon, food and supply minister, at Kairon village; Ajit Singh Kohar, transport minister, at Jalandhar; Bikram Singh Majithia, minister for revenue and rehabilitation, at Amritsar; Balbir Singh Ghunas at Barnala; Parminder Singh Dhindsa at Sangrur; Surjit Singh Rakhra at Patiala and Prem Mittal at Mansa.”

Sukhdev Singh Kokri Kalan said the chief minister refused to enhance compensation for whitefly attack victims and minimum support price for Basmati 1121.

Active organisations, Kirti Kisan Union, Bharti Kisan Union (Ugrahana), Ludhiana, will gherao Shiromani Akali Dal Jagraon MLA Shiv Ram Kaler on Friday.

Kirti Kisan Union president Hardev Singh Sandhu said, “Farmers are facing major crisis and the state government is not ready to talk to them. We will gherao Shiv Ram Kaler at Jagraon. We have prepared all things and going to implement the gherao call by eight organisations.” Farmers will assemble at SDM office then start a march towards the residence of MLA Shiv Ram Kaler. We have three demands that Basmati 1509 and 1121 should be purchased at `4,500 per quintal and `5,000 per quintal, respectively; the government should make a law to clear farmer’s debit and compensation policy.”

Singh added that farmers are suffering due to the whitefly attack on cotton crops. We demand minimum support price for Basmati 1121 and 1509.”

Hardev Singh Sandhu further said, “Despite protest against desecration of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, farmers will execute the gherao call.”
