Following a verbal spat between Congress MLA Kuljeet Singh Nagra and Fatehgarh Sahib sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Pooja Syal Grewal at a meeting to discuss an anti-encroachment drive on Monday at the Sirhind municipal council office, the former lodged a complaint against the latter for using abusive language.
However, Nagra denied the allegation and accused the sub-divisonal magistrate of not following protocol.
He said Grewal had insulted him by urging shopkeepers to directly contact her instead of approaching the elected representative of the area.
Grewal had complained to deputy commissioner Arun Sekhri that she had only told the people that they could directly approach her over their grievances as it was her duty.
She alleged that MLA Nagra got agitated over this and used “foul language”.
The MLA said the meeting was held to discuss encroachments at the Old Sirhind Grain Market.
The SDM was not cooperative as she did not arrive “on time for the meeting, he alleged.
For a meeting at 10.30 am, Grewal arrived only at 11.30 am and that too only after the DC intervened upon his urging, said Nagra.
Calling it a conspiracy to malign his image, the Congress MLA said he had submitted a complaint of violation of protocol against the SDM, to the deputy commissioner.
A copy had been sent to the Punjab assembly speaker.
DC Sekhri confirmed that Grewal had complained about the MLA abusing her in front of the public.
Sekhri said he had asked her to submit a written complaint to be forwarded to the state government.
However, he said, he had not received a written complaint from MLA Nagra.
