Depressed because of the alleged harassment of his daughter for dowry, a man jumped into a canal in the Abohar subdivision of Fazilka district on Monday and gave up his life.
In July 2009, Sham Lal Chhabra of Sunder Nagar here had married off his daughter, Nagma, to Anubhav of Chandigarh. "The wedding expenditure was in keeping with the families' economic status," said Radha, Chhabra's wife. "We even gifted the groom a car."
"Nagma's in-laws started pressuring her to bring a Toyota Innova car in dowry and when we failed to fulfil their wish, they tortured Nagma so much that she had to leave their house a year ago," said Radha. "It shook my husband."
On Monday morning, Chhabra had gone off to the local bus stand to see off Nagma to Chandigarh where she had a job. Long hours past, his two-wheeler, other belongings and a suicide note lay by the Malukpura canal on the Abohar-Hanumangarh road.
In the suicide note, he had held his daughters' husband, Anubhav; father-in-law, Vijay Kumar; mother-in-law, Madhu; and sister-in-law responsible for his death and the harassment of Nagma.
Varinder Singh Brar, superintendent of police in Abohar, confirmed the incident and the registration of a case against the family named in the suicide note. After autopsy, Chhabra's family claimed his body.
