In a major breakthrough, the Batala police on Wednesday arrested two persons and recovered from them Rs 50 lakh cash and 1.5 kilogram heroin, with an estimated worth of Rs 7.5 crore in the international market.
In a press conference, Batala senior superintendent of police (SSP) SS Mand said after getting a tip-off, a police team under the CIA staff in-charge laid a naka near Bode Di Khuhi at the Batala-Jalandhar bypass. During the checking of vehicles, a Maruti Swift car (bearing registration number PB-06-S-6136) coming from the Jalandhar side was intercepted.
The police recovered 1.5 kilogram heroin and Rs 50 lakh currency from the car. The occupants were identified as Parshotam Lal and his son Kawarjit Singh, residents of Dera Baba Nanak.
The accused allegedly tried to bribe the police for letting them off. After getting refusal, they tried to run away but were overpowered by the police party.
The senior superintendent of police further said during preliminary investigation, it was learnt that the accused were running a dhaba in Bihar and they had sold heroin worth Rs 50 lakh and were returning home.
A case under sections 21/61/85 of the NDPS Act, section 12 of the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against both the accused at the Civil Lines police station.
The police are investigating the case, the SSP added.
