A six-year-old boy and his father suffered burn injuries when the latter fell allegedly after losing his balance while walking on burning embers as part of a ritual on the occasion of the annual Mata Meeriamma fair at Kazi Mandi area in Jalandhar.

The incident occurred on Monday night when Raja, while carrying his son Kartik, was walking on burning embers.

The bystanders rushed to their rescue and took them to hospital. Local BJP MLA Manoranjan Kalia, who met the injured father-son duo at the hospital, said: “I have provided them a financial assistance of Rs 10,000 and sent them to Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS).”

While Raja suffered 20 per cent burn injuries, Kartik suffered 20-25 per cent burn injuries, he added. During the annual Mata Meeriamma fair at Kazi mandi area, it is a tradition among the people to walk on burning embers spread 20 feet in length to appease the deity.
