The Fazilka police on Sunday nabbed a Border Security Force (BSF) constable and four others for smuggling drugs from across the international border with Pakistan.

They also recovered 5kg of heroin, Rs 68 lakh in cash, two cars and two Pakistani mobile SIM cards from them. It is the first such incident when a BSF man was arrested for smuggling drugs from across the border. The police had received a tip-off about the gang involving a BSF insider.

Sources said that during investigation, it was found that when 25-year-old Harpartap Singh, a BSF constable posted with 117 Battalion at SS Wala Border Out Post in Abohar sector, went on leave to his village Jasraon in Amritsar in April, he came in contact with one Nachhatar Singh of the neighbouring village Hashimpura.

Sources said Nachhatar, an active member of a drug mafia led by Kulwinder Singh, roped in Harpartap for effecting trans-border smuggling of heroin at the SS Wala border out post. They struck a deal to pay Harpartap Rs 70,000 per kg of the heroin smuggled with his help. The BSF constable was also given a Pak SIM card. When he resumed duty, Pakistan-based druglord Bhola contacted Harpartap, who allegedly facilitated three crossings of heroin consignments across the border that contained 123kg heroin besides two pistols between May 22 and June 12.

Meanwhile, Kulwinder, along with accomplices Buta Singh and Gurbachan Singh, was handing over further delivery of the contraband in Mumbai via Delhi.

After the three consignments, Kulwinder and the gang went quiet, so Harpartap himself contacted one Bhola in Pakistan, who put him in touch with drug smuggler Balraj Singh of Naushehra Dhalla village in Amritsar, who was on parole in a case of drug seizure of 2012.

On June 28, Harpartap facilitated the crossing of a heroin consignment of 40kg for Balraj and his aide Kaka. They were in an advanced stage of smuggling another consignment when the Fazilka police nabbed them on Sunday.

Giving details, Bathinda IG Paramraj Singh Umranangal said Harpartap had been paid Rs 1.14 crore for facilitating the trans-border crossing of 163kg contraband.

“The police have arrested Harpartap, Harbir Singh, Nachhatar Singh, Buta Singh and Gurbachan Singh. A police hunt is on to nab Kulwinder Singh and Balraj Singh, the end recipients and others involved in the network,” the IG said.

When asked if more BSF officials were involved, the IG said a special team led by Ferozepur DIG Amar Singh Chahal and Fazilka SSP Swapan Sharma had been set up to investigate the smuggling network.

A case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act has been registered at the Jalalabad Sadar police station.
