A wave of anguish spread among residents of Fazilka on Monday evening following the death of a young teacher, who had sustained severe injuries when he had tried to protect a neighbour from some people, who were trying to snatch a bag containing cash from him (neighbour).
On February 15 late evening, Brahmanand Sharma, a local medical practitioner, after closing down his shop at the Clock Chowk here, was going home at Gandhi Nagar while carrying his cash bag on a bike. In the meantime, three persons on a bike tried to snatch the bag from Sharma, but when he raised alarm, Sandeep Kumar, 23, a government teacher, came to his rescue and held one of the robbers (later identified as Ashwani Kumar of Mumbeki village, Fazilka). But Ashwani allegedly fired a gunshot at Sandeep and fled away with his accomplices.
Injured Sandeep was initially hospitalised at the local civil hospital but, later, referred to Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital, Faridkot. But sensing his further deteriorating condition, the victim was shifted to Dayanand Medical College, Ludhiana.
Due to poor economic condition of the victim's family, local residents, government teachers and shopkeepers came forward and collected money for his treatment which cost Rs 14.5 lakh. However, he died on Monday evening. Sandeep Kumar got married only two months ago. He has been survived by his wife, parents and a younger brother.
