Parking of Feroze Gandhi Market was on Tuesday auctioned at Rs 30.50 lakh.
Municipal Corporation had kept the reserve price at Rs 25 lakh that did not see a steep rise for the parking of the market that is one of the commercial centers of the city.
Auction took place at Zone D office of civic body in which six bidders took part. The parking would be managed for a period of six months against the one year contract earlier.
The step of six month contract has been taken in the wake of complaints of fleecing of residents at the hands of contractor that are often received by the MC.
Bidders who were present in the auction accused the MC of going strict on parking contractors in different areas of the city.
They said that the cost would not be able to be recovered within a period of six months. Last year the parking was auctioned for Rs 1.90 crore for a period of one year.
Jasdev Sekhon, superintendent of Zone D said that some of the contractors who had come in the auction threatened that they would boycott the process if the price was not lowered.
“Price has been fixed after deliberations and could not be lowered” said Sekhon.
Hundred of vehicles visit the market everyday as a large number of banks, jewellery showrooms and other establishments are located in the market.
Raju contractor who also took part in the auction said that the MC has told that the cost of parking for two wheelers would be brought down to Rs 5 from Rs 10 and for four wheelers Rs 10 from Rs 20, “that would never recover our money” said Raju.
AS Sekhon who is chief of health and sanitation wing and was part of bidding process said that the parking has been allotted to the contractor on provisional basis and discussions would take place with Mayor and Commissioner after which contract papers would be prepared.
